Post-Surgical Care
Tips From MA Dental Care
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is essential to a smooth recovery after a dental procedure. The better you care for your teeth and gums, the fewer visits you’ll need for follow-up treatments. Whether you've had a root canal, surgical extraction, dental filling, crown, bridge, or implant, following these post-operative guidelines will help protect your results and promote faster healing.

After your procedure, it’s important to modify your diet to avoid irritating the treatment area. For the first 48 hours, stick to a soft diet and chew on the opposite side of your mouth. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods, as well as anything that breaks into small pieces, like popcorn, nuts, seeds, raw vegetables, and whole grains.
Minimize sugary and starchy snacks, as they create an environment where harmful bacteria can thrive. If you do consume them, brush and floss promptly afterward. Sensitivity to hot or cold, as well as some pressure or swelling, may occur but usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours.

Managing Pain and DiscomfortItem Link List Item 2
Over-the-counter pain relievers can effectively manage most post-procedure discomfort. For best results, take medication as recommended, ideally before the pain becomes severe. Never exceed the suggested dosage.
While mild discomfort is normal, persistent pain could indicate an issue such as tooth decay, a cracked tooth, or a loose filling. If you're experiencing ongoing pain, please schedule an appointment with our office so we can assess and treat the underlying cause.
Avoid activities that can disrupt the healing process, such as using straws, spitting forcefully, swishing fluids vigorously, or smoking.

Proper Home CareItem Link
Gentle brushing is key to protecting the treatment site. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and follow your dentist’s recommendations for the most appropriate toothpaste. If you're unsure which products are best for your recovery, we’re happy to help guide you.
It’s normal for your gums to feel tender around the treated area. Keep the site clean by brushing and flossing gently, and rinse with warm saltwater (mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) to soothe irritation and reduce bacteria. These simple steps can significantly speed up your healing time.
