Oral Cancer Screenings

Early Detection Matters

Oral cancer is the 13th most commonly diagnosed cancer, according to the Canadian Dental Association, and can develop in areas like the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor or roof of the mouth, sinuses, and throat. At MA Dental Care, we include screenings during routine checkups to catch early signs. While oral cancer is relatively rare, especially without a history of tobacco use or genetic risk, regular screenings are a smart preventive step. If we notice any unusual bumps, lesions, or changes, we’ll recommend the appropriate follow-up.

What to Expect During a Screening

Your screening starts with a review of your medical and dental history, including current medications, allergies, and lifestyle habits such as tobacco or alcohol use. If necessary, we perform a visual and physical examination to:

  • Check your head, neck, and lymph nodes for swelling or tenderness
  • Inspect your lips, tongue, palate, and the floor of your mouth
  • Examine high-risk areas like the underside of the tongue and soft tissues

Know the Warning Signs

While these symptoms can be caused by non-cancerous conditions, they should be evaluated during your dental exam:

  • Red or white patches in the mouth
  • Sores that bleed or don’t heal
  • Lumps or thick areas inside the mouth
  • Pain, numbness, or discomfort in the lips or mouth
  • Difficulty with chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue

Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention

Early diagnosis greatly improves treatment success. If oral cancer is detected, treatment may involve surgery, radiation, or a combination, depending on the stage. In advanced cases, chemotherapy might also be needed. To lower your risk, avoid tobacco, limit alcohol, eat a balanced diet, and protect your lips from sun exposure. HPV is also linked to certain oral cancers, so safe behaviors and vaccinations may further reduce your risk.
